Southwest Airlines Features Wayne Elsey in Spirit

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Rapid Rewards Freedom Story

Wayne Elsey

Soles4Souls, Nashville, TN

Much like Southwest Airlines, Wayne Elsey's company, Soles4Souls, focuses on doing the right thing. In Wayne's case, this means providing shoes to people in need around the globe. "We have a simple, specific mission: changing the world with the gift of shoes," says Wayne about his company. Since its inception in 2005, Soles4Souls has distributed more than 10 million pairs of shoes to people in 125 countries.

As founder and CEO, Wayne spends most of his time traveling from his home in Nashville, Tennessee to Orlando, Florida; Chicago; and New England. Wayne started flying Southwest Airlines more than 15 years ago. After being "at the top levels of multiple airlines 'loyalty programs," Southwest has become his "go-to" airline as he appreciates the high level of Customer Service and the ease of Southwest's entire process. "I feel like a valued customer," he says, "not a check mark on an itinerary." Beause he flies with Southwest so frequently, Wayne says Employees often recognize him on flights as "the shoe guy," and have even offered him donations.

Wayne prefers Southwest to other airlines because of its low fares, flexibility, and the "friendly Service and fun attitudes" he experiences both on the ground and in the air. Wayne says he appreciated the ease of Southwest's Rapid Rewards Program, and the fact that he can earn an Award Ticket after only eight roundtrips. With the amount of flying Wayne does, that adds up to several Award Tickets each year.

When asked how the core values of Southwest Airlines line up with that of Soles4Souls, Wayne explains how each company exists to "make a difference in the lives of millions of people." While Southwest Airlines began with the goal of providing everyone with the Freedom to fly, Wayne started Soles4Souls to ensure that everyone has access to shoes. In addition, he feels each company is "committed to performance, our planet, and people."

Thank you, Wayne, for being a loyal Southwest Customer. We appreciate you, and we're grateful to be part of your mission to "change the world with the gift of shoes."

Five Years After Hurricane Katrina: Soles4Souls Continues to Give New Shoes to Gulf Coast Residents

Shoe charity donating 50,000 pairs to people in Gulf Port, Biloxi and New Orleans

Nashville & New Orleans -- In 2005, a footwear executive named Wayne Elsey called hundreds of his friends and colleagues in the shoe industry to gather new shoes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He set up a website called KatrinaShoes.org to help publicize the effort, and over one million pairs of brand new shoes were donated by almost every shoe company in existence.

Soon after, Elsey's effort for people reeling from Hurricane Katrina became a full-time job under the name of Soles4Souls. It now counts famous actors, athletes and musicians as its ambassadors. The charity recently crossed the 10 million pair mark in donated footwear (into 126 countries) and is rapidly growing to become one of the most recognized charities in North America.

Few people are aware that Elsey and his team continue donating brand new shoes to people living in the Gulf Coast. "We cannot forget our friends in the Gulf Coast who are still working to rebuild their lives in the wake of the costliest natural disaster in our country's history," Elsey said. "A pair of new shoes is a luxury item to the thousands of Americans still living in FEMA trailers and struggling day-to-day. The least we can do is take care of their footwear needs," Elsey said.

The charity is donating another 50,000 pairs of shoes to residents in Gulf Port, Biloxi and New Orleans through trusted local agencies like Streams of Life in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They are continuing to distribute food, clothing, and household items to individual families on behalf of non-profit organizations like Soles4Souls. Some of those receiving supplies include single moms, mentally handicapped adults, veteran's groups, the working poor, and inner-city school children.

Michael Franti Partners with Soles4Souls

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Partnership To Include Nine-City “Barefoot Concert Series”, Footwear Drives And Fundraising Efforts Targeting The Collection Of 100,000 Pairs

Michael Franti today announced his partnership with Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity dedicated to providing free shoes to people in need around the world. In an effort to collect/sponsor 100,000 pairs of shoes, the campaign will serve to raise awareness of the need for footwear both nationally and internationally in order to enhance the lives of families worldwide through a cooperative effort to distribute critically needed footwear.

In addition, nine cities along Franti’s “The Sound of Sunshine Tour” this Fall will be designated as part of The “Barefoot Concert Series” (see dates below) where fans can donate/sponsor shoes and learn more about the programs at Soles4Souls. Fans will also be able to donate funds via text message by texting keyword “FRANTI” to 20222 or via www.michaelfranti.com and www.soles4souls.org. Local distributions, as well as additional promotions (including impromptu “busking” performances by Franti), will be held in select cities throughout his tour.

The two will partner to raise money through the charity's “$1 equals 1 pair” program. For every dollar that is raised, Soles4Souls will donate a pair of shoes to someone in need. The partnership is especially significant for 2010, as it marks anniversaries for both Soles4Souls (the distribution of its 10 millionth pair of shoes) and for Franti, who decided to go shoeless 10 years ago.

A musician, poet, social humanitarian and activist, Franti is recognized as a pioneering force in branding music as a vehicle for global social activism. In 2000, while traveling the globe, Franti saw unfathomable poverty, which amongst other things, had children and adults walking barefoot.

Upon his return to his home in San Francisco, Franti decided to give up shoes for three days to learn what it would be like to be constantly barefoot, and his trial period turned into a 10-year campaign. He can only be seen wearing flip-flops when boarding a plane or in a restaurant.

“Ten years ago I made a decision to go barefoot after playing music for kids in many countries who could not afford shoes,” said Franti. “I know some of the aches and pains that go along with being barefoot, but have no idea what it’s like to not be able to afford them. Partnering with Soles4Souls is a way of putting my experience to use helping families take a first step out of the cycle of poverty.”

"We're honored that Michael is joining with us to give shoes to people in need," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "It's not everyday that you have such a dynamic artist willing to take time out of their busy schedule to become personally engaged in our mission, and we are delighted to be a part of it," he said.

Michael is the founder and lead singer of Michael Franti & Spearhead. For over two decades, the Bay Area born Franti has been bringing our world exceptionally powerful, deeply felt music. The Sound of Sunshine is Michael Franti & Spearhead’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2008’s Top 40 hit All Rebel Rockers. The album is set for release on September 21st and the album’s title track and single is currently #1 on the AAA chart. In addition, Michael is the creator of the Power to the Peaceful (PTTP) festival in San Francisco. This year’s 12th annual festival will take place on September 11th and is a part of “The Barefoot Concert Series”. PTTP is one of the nation’s largest free annual music festivals with over 50,000 attendees and serves to promote change through music, art and action.

Clothes4Souls Launches Mobile Campaign

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

ANNOUNCing LAUNCH OF ‘MOBILE GIVING’ CAMPAIGN THROUGH THE MOBILE GIVING FOUNDATION

Clothes4Souls, in close partnership with the Mobile Giving Foundation (MBF) and Distributive Networks (DN), is now accepting donations for their clothing charity through text messages. More than 270 million Americans have mobile devices, and 99% of those phones support text messaging – the reasoning behind Clothes4Souls decision to make donations and fundraising as easy as typing the word ‘CLOTHES’ and pressing send. They will join the growing portfolio of other prestigious non-profit organizations that accept donations through mobile texts.

Mobile Giving compliments the simplicity of Clothes4Souls’ cause and allows supporters to give easily in an instant, whether riding in the car or at a live concert, without providing credit card information, participating in a lengthy phone call, or having to visit a website. Offering the freedom to solicit donations through spokespersons, live events, media appearances, print, television, radio and web, Mobile Giving creates another platform of communication by allowing the charity to begin donor dialogue with their supporters.

“The innovation of Mobile Giving provides a new easy channel for our supporters,” said Kevin Goughary, COO/CFO of Clothes4Souls, Inc. “It eliminates the ‘Why’ and creates a ‘Why Not’ giving scenario.”

The plan works with all major cell phone providers (T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T) and allows users to text a key word to a 5-digit phone number and a $5 donation will be sent to Soles4Souls through the carrier. The $5 donation will appear on the subscriber’s subsequent month’s bill.

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Donors Explain How Clothes4Souls Makes Giving Easy

By Jacqueline Micucci

From Footwear News Special Publication

RENEE MORRELL wanted to get more involved with her community. The store manager of Annie Sez in East Northport, N.Y., was watching an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” when she saw an organization that looked like it would be a good fi t: Soles4Souls. It wasn’t until she called the charity herself that she discovered that Big M Inc, the parent company of Annie Sez, was already working with the organization. But she learned the charity had just launched another branch: Clothes4Souls. “I thought, ‘Terrific!,’” Morrell said. “We’re a clothing store, so this is an even better fit.”

Throughout the month of April, customers at the East Northport branch of Annie Sez were invited to bring in a pair of gently worn jeans or a coat in exchange for 10-percent off their purchases. “I had one customer who brought in 10 pairs of jeans and didn’t buy anything,” Morrell said. “A lot of our customers thought it was a great idea.” In addition, the high
school students who work at Morrell’s store also got behind the drive. “They distributed fl yers around their schools and posted the information on their Facebook pages,” she said. “They did a great job of getting the word out.”

By the end of the month, the store had collected 55 pairs of jeans and 45 coats. Though Morrell said she would’ve loved to have collected more, she was very pleased with her involvement and with the charity’s efficiency. “Clothes4Souls was great to work with,” she said. “I can be a pain with all my questions, but they were truly amazing. They are great organizers and it’s a great cause.”

ZACHARY KNAUS had a similar and equally rewarding experience working with Clothes4Souls. Knaus is a business customer service rep for AT&T in Evansville, Ind., and a member of the Pioneers, a volunteer organization made up of U.S. and Canadian telecommunications workers. As such, he’s always looking for a good charity with which his local chapter can get involved.

“I saw that a call center in another part of Indiana had done a shoe drive and thought that was a great idea,” he explained. “My supervisor and I contacted them and they directed us to the Soles4Souls website. I saw that they also had a group collecting clothing and I thought we could collect even more items if we did a clothing drive.”

The Haiti and Chile earthquakes were still in the headlines, so Knaus wanted to focus the drive around helping those regions. He put up fliers, sent company-wide e-mails and even listed the clothing drive on CraigsList.org and Yahoo’s Freecycle. Beyond the approximately 1,000 employees working in his call center, Knaus also convinced people in the community to donate coats and jeans to the cause.

“The drive was held between March 1 to 15, and we ended up with 974 pounds of clothing,” Knaus said. “Between the shoes we received and the clothes, it was a total of 1,700 items.” Some of the donated items were even brand new, he noted. Working with Clothes4Souls was both a rewarding and pleasant experience, Knaus said. “The organization was very prompt at getting back to me when I had questions,” he noted. Knaus decided to drive the
product to Nashville himself along with a friend and her 4-year-old daughter. “They made her feel like she was part of it all,” he recalled. “The staff made her feel special, and that’s something she’ll remember.”

It’s also something he’ll never forget. “I’m a big fan of helping out,” said Knaus. “Even if I’m no longer working for AT&T in the future, I would still work with Clothes4Souls. They left that deep of an impression on me.”

Soles4Souls® Inc., the international shoe charity that gives away new and gently worn shoes, announced today it will begin providing new clothing to people in need through Clothes4Souls, a charitable division of Soles4Souls. Clothes4Souls will collect new clothing from manufacturers, designers, retail partners and the general public. In addition, gently worn jeans and coats will be accepted during community events held at select retailers throughout the year.

"We are so excited about the much anticipated launch of our clothing arm and the expansion of our charity to clothes," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "We have consistently collected clothing from our footwear partners with apparel lines in the past, and now we will have the complete infrastructure to acquire and distribute clothing to people in need worldwide. We’ve already received donations from our friends at Miss Me Jeans, American Apparel, Blac Label Premium, Artisans, New Balance and Converse."

“We were honored to partner with Soles4Souls in their efforts to bring relief to the victims of the Haitian earthquake,” said Agnes Hyo-Sung Jung, Marketing Manager for Miss Me Jeans. “And now we are delighted to stand with them as lasting partners with the launch of their clothing division, Clothes4Souls,” she added.

"Our footprint is changing as we forge forward for the next five years," said Elsey. "We recognized the overwhelming need, both internationally and domestically, for clothing, and we hope to offer the general public and our apparel partners an avenue to give back more than just footwear," he said.

NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK TEACHES THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCEPTANCE, ENJOYING LIFE AND BEING DIFFERENT

Children’s Book Author, Blair Hahn, Unveils Creative Board Book – My Purple Toes – and Dedicates a Portion of its Proceeds to Benefit Nonprofit, Soles4Souls

People come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, which is what makes life interesting and fun. Inspired by a trip to a nail salon with his teenage daughter, first time author, Blair Hahn, is pleased to introduce My Purple Toes, a creative children’s board book that tells a true account of a father’s experience navigating life with purple painted toenails. Written for children between the ages of one and five, My Purple Toes teaches a simple yet relevant lesson about the importance of enjoying life, expressing oneself and accepting others. A significant portion of the book’s proceeds will benefit Soles4Souls, a charity that provides shoes to persons in need.

Throughout the book, children can look for dad’s purple toes in various environments and also find a friendly-frog that hides on each page. My Purple Toes features imaginative, cheerful illustrations from Charleston based artist, Tate Nation, on a board-style book that offers durability ideal for young children.

“The idea for My Purple Toes all started with a trip to a nail salon with my daughter who I astonished when I boldly offered to get my toenails painted purple, and through this experience, I found a few simple, light-hearted lessons that I wanted to share with children everywhere,” said children’s author, Blair Hahn. “Furthermore, the launch of My Purple Toes has created a unique opportunity to give back to children in need, and we look forward to donating to Soles4Souls in support of its worthy cause.”

The author’s story and his inspiration for the book are depicted in the book’s introduction as well as on the book website, which also includes learning lessons, tips for parents interested in throwing a “Purple Party” around My Purple Toes, and information about the book’s charitable donation. Soles4Souls is a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes shoes to people in need worldwide, and since 2005, it has provided more than 10 million pairs of shoes to people in need.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with author, Blair Hahn, on behalf of his new children’s book, My Purple Toes,” said Wayne Elsey, founder & CEO of Soles4Souls. “His simple life lessons about being accepting of all people and living life to its fullest are a spirit we share at Soles4Souls, and we greatly appreciate Blair’s generous donation to our organization, as we seek to fulfill thousands of requests for shoes from people around the world.”

My Purple Toes is available for purchase online for $10.99 at MyPurpleToes.com or by calling 1(800)247-6553.
Do Something - Soles4Souls Article in Success Magazine

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

One person... One Idea... 10 million Pairs of shoes, and Counting

Wayne Elsey knew he had to do something when he saw an image of a lone shoe on the beach after the 2004 tsunami hit Southeast Asia. At the time, he was the president of a shoe company, and the image and the immense need struck a chord.

Elsey conspired with others in his network to collect and distribute shoes to people who had lost everything. In only eight weeks, he collected more than 250,000 pairs of shoes for Southeast Asians. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Elsey coordinated another effort and collected more that 1 million pairs of shoes. Six months later, Elsey, who was still managing his corporate responsibilities, founded the nonprofit Soles4Souls to begin collecting and distributing shoes on an ongoing basis. In 2007, he left his corporate position to oversee the effort full time.

Elsey's message is simple: Each person has the ability to make an impact on someone's life. "There's nothing that's too small to make a difference. You can go down the street, within a mile of your house, and find someone who is hurting," he says. "There's a natural disaster happening in people's lives every day."

Soles4Souls began at what Elsey says was a grass-roots level. Want to make a difference? Here are a few words of advice:

Person to person. "Give people a little grace and love," Elsey says. "You're not the only one dealing with stuff. Everybody has stuff."

As an organization. If your company or group is working on a charitable effort, keep your message simple. "Simple is better. our message is very simple: We get and give shoes," he says.

Do something. "You can do it - you can make a difference. Get off the couch, find something that you're passionate about, and do something. It doesn't have to take a lot of money: you just have to be a person with heart to make a difference in people's lives."

Old Shoes Have New Life - Green Matters

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Is your closet clogged up with sneakers, tennis shoes, flip flops, cleats, hiking boots, rubber galoshes, and the like? Or do you want to remove "old" shoes and upgrade your shoe closet? Have your children outgrown their shoes and left you to deal with a collection of more or less a dozen pair of shoes?

Instead of throwing old footwear into the trash where they'll end up in a landfill, donate them to Sole4Souls, which collects old shoes and distributes them to those who need them.

This excellent way of reduce and reuse distributes shoes, free of charge, to recipients in over 125 countries as well as the U.S., so recipients could be those in your city who are struggling to make ends meet, or people as far away as Thailand, Nepal, or Kenya.

Soles4Souls also accepts brand new shoes from consumers, retailers, and manufacturers, so that out-of-style inventory won't become trash as new inventory moves in to replace the "old" inventory on the shelves.

Find out where you can drop off your old shoes by clicking here.

Nike also accepts old shoes, grinds down every part of the shoe to make 3 different kinds of surfaces: running tracks, basket ball courts, and tennis courts. Click here to see a brief video that shows how Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe process works.

For a drop off location, click here.

Both sites offer a great way to extend the life of shoes, but they don't take ladies' heeled shoes as these types of shoes don't have the materials that can be ground up to make different surfaces, and the poor in developing countries really don't have a need for high-heeled shoes. More innovation from manufacturers and corporations might, in time, figure out a way to reuse the materials from high-heels, giving consumers more options in recycling goods and buying recycled goods.

VOS Flips Announce Two Steps at a Time Program

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

VOS FLIPS ANNOUNCES TWO STEPS AT A TIME™ PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SOLES4SOULS®, THE SHOE CHARITY

100% Recyclable Natural Rubber Sandal to donate a pair of shoes for every pair sold

Nashville, TN – June 2010 – VOS recyclable natural rubber sandals are excited to announce that for every pair of sandals sold the company will donate a pair to a person in need. The Two Steps At A Time™ program will be implemented in partnership with Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity. Soles4Souls has donated more than 8 million pairs of shoes worldwide, and most recently committed more than 1.3 million pairs to the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

VOS was founded to answer a simple question: can people afford to care? VOS believes most people have a genuine desire to help others and the planet, but unfortunately the majority of these people don’t have the time or resources to have a significant impact on their own. Through their eco-friendly sandal and their Two Steps At A Time™ program, VOS offers everyone the possibility to help others, keep the planet clean and they do it without asking people to spend more than what they usually spend.

“We are excited about our partnership with VOS and their Two Steps At A Time™ program,” said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “The simple gift of shoes can truly change someone’s life, and brands like VOS are making a huge impact on the international community with their long-term commitments to make a difference.”

“We believe it’s important to have short and long term goals in our social efforts if we want to have a significant impact in the communities we are supporting,” said José Alejandro Flores, Founder of VOS. “With our Two Steps At A Time™ program and our partnership with Soles4Souls we are taking a right step to get there, but we believe that by taking the left step of providing health care and education to the rubber producing communities that cultivate our raw materials as well, we are truly going to make a difference.”

Taming of the Shoe - Celebrating A Perfect Fit!

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Larry Le Brane’s art-shoe fans usually anticipate his latest one-of-a-kind glass sculptures with curious fascination.

And that pleases the mixed-media artist, who creates unique glass footwear, including flip-flops, Asian-style geta sandals, and his very popular series of exaggerated stiletto pumps. His designs blend a love of combining yard sale cast-offs, fused glass, detailed craftsmanship with a street-wise and academic background.

Tennessee’s hard-working Soles4Souls team is also delighted whenever this ‘West Coast glass-cobbler’ exhibits new shoe art, too. For the 2nd year, Le Brane selected international Soles4Souls™ as the benefactor when his whimsical glass shoes are featured in art exhibits, Open Studios Art Tours, or special events.

Soles4Souls™ is dedicated to changing the world through donations of new and gently-used footwear, such as during previous Katrina and Haiti crises. Larry and his co-hosts typically donate a portion of any art proceeds to Soles4Souls™ to help promote their mission. Last May, his imaginative exhibit “Taming Of The Shoe…& Tea Cups, Too!” showcased his fused-glass shoe sculptures and new tea cup corsets, alongside chic Italian footwear. !ROMP, an upscale shoe boutique in San Luis Obispo, CA, celebrated its 5th anniversary with Le Brane’s month-long art exhibit, stylish fashion shows, and the sharing of Soles4Souls’s message.

In May 2009, !ROMP owner, Karen English originally suggested Soles4Souls when Larry Le Brane asked about charity donations for their 1st shoe exhibit, “The Perfect Fit: Walk This Way.” !ROMP hung giant shoe posters in their downtown windows, plus shared Soles4Souls’ inspiring message and contribution opportunities with guests. English described how !ROMP’s stylish footwear, Soles4Souls™ and Larry’s glass shoes are an ideal match.

“With our fragile economy and recurring natural disasters, sometimes our art patrons and fashion clients are torn. They love our latest Italian selections and Larry’s glass shoe sculpture. But often they may feel guilty spending money on perceived luxuries. Soles4Souls™ helps all of us celebrate shoes AND do our part to improve the world, too! That’s the message we try to share with our guests during Larry’s creative shoe exhibits.” Both co-hosts donated a portion from the recent May exhibit to Soles4Souls™.

Larry says, “Our art exhibit donations may be small, but every dollar counts. Every shoe-story matters to someone, somewhere. My shoe stories have varied backgrounds or inspiration. Like my Mardi Gras-themed party stilettos, “Let The Good Times Roll.” I started with a pair of chattering toy teeth and a party mask, but I also wanted to exaggerate adult excess. Soles4Souls™ helped Katrina survivors by providing tons of shoes. Now, telling my art-shoe story is richer, more meaningful. Hopefully, people who buy my artwork feel connected when we suggest they donate shoes. Celebrating life through art, especially with my glass-shoe sculpture is hopeful, life-affirming.”

Wendy Walter, Gallery Manager for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art agrees. After seeing Larry’s exhibit at !ROMP, she installed an encore exhibition in June at the Museum’s Showcase Gallery. “Everyone could relate to Larry’s glass shoes on some level. All ages connected---they stopped, touched the art, commented, and laughed. In these dark, heavy times, it was so rewarding to watch guests uplifted by this well-crafted and fun artwork.”

In July, Larry Le Brane’s glass shoes will hit the road again, as Soles4Souls celebrates its 5th anniversary at their new international offices in Old Hickory, Tennessee. A selection of Le Brane’s footwear sculpture will be included in Soles4Souls’ VIP Reception, July 21-22. The mixed-media artist is proud and honored that founder Wayne Elsey wants to share Larry’s shoe-art creations with his team and special guests at this well-deserved party. “Who knew that shoes---both artful and donated---would take us to this place in today’s world? I guess it really IS one imagined or one real pair of shoes at a time…” Definitely a perfect fit.

Celebrate your fascination with shoes by trading in a gently-worn pair at Soles4Souls.org. Plus, enjoy more of Larry Le Brane’s fantasy footwear in the national traveling exhibit, “The Perfect Fit: Shoes Tell Stories,” Fuller Craft Museum (www.fullercraft.org), the Nicolaysen Museum (www.thenic.org), Albany Institute of History & Art (www.albanyinstitute.org. Also see Le Brane’s art at www.larrylebrane.com or Facebook/Larry Le Brane. His eclectic artwork is shown regularly at The Gallery At The Network (http://galleryatthenetwork.com) and San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (http://galleryatthenetwork.com), both in San Luis Obispo, CA.

By: Ethan C. Nobles 29 June 2010

Just about everybody has shoes in their closets they no longer wear.

Instead of letting them go to waste, Foot Solutions is asking residents to bring their gently worn footwear to their two Arkansas locations in Little Rock and Bentonville so they can be put to good use.

Through July, Foot Solutions will be donating the shoes to Soles4Souls, an international shoe charity that has already donated more than 10 million pairs of shoes in more than 125 countries.

“We are blessed to serve customers in northwest and central Arkansas with their foot care needs. Extending this help to those around the world is our small part of the solution,” said Mike Smith, certified pedorthist, and owner of Foot Solutions in Arkansas.

During the shoe drive last year, Arkansas residents donated over 1,000 pairs of shoes, a number Smith is hoping to surpass this year. In addition to sending shoes throughout the world, donations also go to assist local Arkansans through charities like The Homeless Ministry – The Church at Rock Creek, Women and Children First, Samaritan Center of NW Arkansas and Dress for Success.

Soles4Souls kicked off their summer shoe drive the first week of June with National Barefoot Week. Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support, Foot Solutions in Arkansas is extending the drive through July.

“”It’s wonderful to witness people from all walks of life get involved with our mission, which is to change the world one pair at a time,” said Wayne Elsey, founder and chief executive officer of Soles4Souls. “Foot Solutions is truly an anchor in their community and are making a profound difference to people all over the world.”

People who bring in shoe donations to Foot Solutions will receive $10 per shoe, up to $30 for 3 pairs towards a purchase of $100 or more.

Soles4Souls Featured In USA Today!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Soles4Souls: From Crisis to Opportunity

Following the tsunami in Southeast Asia, Soles4Souls founder and CEO Wayne Elsey pushed footwear companies to donate their overstock to victims. He offered these enterprises a chance to clear their warehouses as well as the opportunityto provide shoes for lower income communities. In this case, a quarter of a million pairs were saved from landfills. The shoes helped survivors clear wreckage, repair homes, and rebuild schools.

A year later came Hurricane Katrina. Elsey rallied schools, organizations, and heads of the shoe industry with a clear message: dispose of excess. The response was overwhelming: over a million pairs helped victims stand up, lace up, and move on.

“Shoes are vital for health reasons. Viruses such as hookworms are a big cause of death. People also need shoes to feel better. Shoes let kids look forward to running, playing and having fun,” says Elsey.

Profits Save Lives
Following Hurricane Katrina, Elsey left as CEO of a shoe company to do something about the crisis. He imagined a group dedicated to raising awareness at home and promoting sustainable development for those in poverty. Soles4Souls launched a year later, and has supplied over 10 million pairs in over 125 countries. Like other distributors, Soles4Souls markets a specific image and seeks the best people to fill its office. On the other hand, the group has bigger shoes to fill.

“Every 15 seconds, a child is infected from some disease that can be prevented with proper shoes. We give away a pair every 9 seconds. You need to ask, what is the need out there?” asks Elsey.

Currently, Soles4Souls supplies shoes in Haiti to speed recovery of infrastructure.

Due to a lack of heavy equipment, locals sweep rubble by hand. They therefore need shoes to guard against sharp debris and foot-borne illnesses while clearing roads and burying casualties.

Organize a Shoe Drive
The success of these outreach programs rests on awareness campaigns at home. Soles4Souls seeks individual donations and hosts shoe drives to move the 1.5 billion shoes that line the closets of America. Any style, shape, or color helps people get back on their feet, from victims of natural disasters to those looking for work.

“What if every American donated a pair of shoes? It’s easy for the average Joe to host a shoe drive to put shoes on people and create a sustainable, long term difference in their lives,” notes Elsey.

Soles4Souls also sponsors individual fundraisers, which have raised over $2 million nationwide, or over 800,000 pairs. Earlier this month, the charity challenged the public to go barefoot during National Barefoot Week, which involved a series of drives, concerts, and festivals to encourage donations. During Barefoot Sunday, over 150,000 churches and congregations kicked off their shoes to support the 1.5 billion around the world without a pair.

Before breaking in a new pair of shoes, Elsey encourages taking a walk in someone else’s. Soles4Souls offers trips to outreach areas such as Haiti, Mexico, and Honduras, where team members close the gap between donor and recipient. Team members also witness how shoes transform recipients’ lives; for many, getting a new pair of shoes was like receiving a luxury car.

GROOBS was founded for one reason. "Compassion." With every pair of GROOBS you purchase, you and GROOBS become partners. Partners in Compassion. For every pair of GROOBS you buy, we will give a new pair of GROOBS to someone in need with the help of the shoe charity www.soles4souls.org. And we're just getting started. In addition to sending a new pair of shoes to a needy individual, you will also get to pick a charity of YOUR CHOICE to send 50% of the proceeds to your chosen charity. For short and to change the meaning of BOGO, we call it “BOGO FIVE O” – Buy One Give One AND 50% of the proceeds will be sent to a charity of YOUR choosing!

"I'm just an average Joe,Tom or Jane, how does simply purchasing pair of GROOBS make such a huge difference?" As we mentioned above, buying a pair of GROOBS is also giving a new pair of shoes to someone who is homeless in your city and may not own a pair of shoes or a child that has never worn a pair of shoes in their life and has an enormous chance of contracting intestinal worms by not wearing a simple pair of shoes. Also, you may be driven to do something about hunger in Houston, Texas. When you checkout you could choose the Houston Food Bank and feed at least five people for a day (YES A DAY) simply by purchasing a pair of GROOBS. Maybe Project Mosquito Net is YOUR charity and you give to them all year round and you are well aware that Malaryia kills a child every 30 seconds and an insecticide treated mosquito bed net would stop this. Well when you buy a pair of GROOBS you automatically are giving again through a purchase you were going to make anyway and your purchase is giving another mosquito bed net to a child.

Go ahead, click the SHOP GROOBS link and give back with GROOBS. Together we can make a difference and you get to choose where those differences are going to be made.

Finally, why shoes? Shoes are a necessity for everyone and collectively as one huge consumer we can make a profound impact in this world we all share. Whether you are passionate about cancer, autism, hunger, poverty and so forth……………..we are all “on fire” about something. You choose your passion!!! With that, GROOBS was born.

It's Easy!

1. Pick out a pair of GROOBS. We will donate a pair to Soles4Souls for delivery around the world

2. Pick a charity you are passionate about.

3. Press CONFIRM ORDER...............BOGO FIVE O!!!

GROOBS. GIVING IS ON OUR SOLE!!!
